Welcome to the Illinois Competitive Energy Association (ICEA)
Competitive Suppliers Provide Customer Choice, Savings and Value in Illinois' Energy Markets
The Illinois Competitive Energy Association (ICEA) is an Illinois-based trade association of alternative retail electric suppliers (ARES) and alternative gas suppliers (AGS) whose mission is to preserve and enhance retail competition and customer choice. As competitive energy suppliers, ICEA is dedicated to ensuring that Illinois citizens, businesses, and all other energy consumers have the opportunity to enjoy the many benefits that competitive markets and competitive electric and natural gas supply service can bring to customers as an alternative to buying supply service from the local utility. ICEA members include Constellation NewEnergy, Inc.; Direct Energy Services, LLC; FirstEnergy Solutions, Corp.; Homefield Energy; Integrys Energy Services, Inc.; MC Squared Energy Services, LLC; NextEra Energy Services, Inc; Nordic Energy Services, LLC; and Verde Energy USA-Illinois.
Over 3.3 Million Electric and 300,000 Gas Customers Have Left the Utilities for ARES and AGS Service
Illinois business, governmental, non-profit and residential customers may buy their electricity and natural gas supply from competitive energy suppliers rather than being stuck with the local utility as their only supply choice because Illinois law allows retail competition and customer choice.
Nearly 2.4 million ComEd residential electric customers and 677,700 Ameren residential electric customers totaling over 3.1 million residential customers have left utility supply service for ARES service in order to stretch their energy dollars and obtain value-added products. Municipal Aggregation is the latest example of electric competition. As of 2013, 677 communities statewide have passed referenda to purchase electric supply service from an ARES rather than the incumbent utility. Over 78% of residential customers served by an ARES are part of an government aggregation program.
Over 320,000 commercial and industrial customers have chosen alternative retail electric suppliers as their electric provider, which affords these job creators and engines of the Illinois economy the edge needed to manage their energy costs, stay in business, and compete in today's marketplace. Nearly 88% of all non-residential load among small, medium and large commercial and industrial customers in the ComEd service territory is ARES provided and from 76% to 87% of this load is ARES provided in the three Ameren Illinois rate zones.
Almost 80% of the all the electricity consumed by all electric customers in Illinois is ARES provided. Competition in Illinois' retail electric market gives these consumers a choice of electric products, green power options and other related services unavailable from the incumbent utility. Retail choice and competition -- it's a good thing!
Due to programs offered to residential and small business customers of Nicor Gas, North Shore Gas and Peoples Gas, these smaller customers currently have the option to purchase their natural gas supply from an alternative gas supplier (AGS). Over 300,00 customers have chosen an AGS to provide their natural gas supply.
